The Patouxai or Arch of Victory is popularly known as “anusawali” (Laos’s word for "monument"), It commands a premier location at the end of Lane Xang Road, which is modeled after the Champ Elysées in France.

This massive ferro-concrete arch was built in the late 1950s to commemorate casualties of war on the side of the Royal Lao Government. Its architecture is inspired from the French’s Arc de Triomphe and its decoration is typical Laotian design with many Buddhist mythological figurines such as kinnari (half-female, half-bird figures). Its ceiling is adorned with reliefs of the Hindu deities and its walls depict characters from the Ramayana, the epic Hindu story of battles between god and evil.

Climbing to its top, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of Vientiane. This is also a great hideaway from the city bustle.
